media production
This is my media production blog where I will showcase the planning evidence for my AS production work. My brief for this year is to create four 15 second commercials for a new horror/ or sci-fi TV channel.
Kuleshov experiment - Our first editing task was to look at how cutaways can change the context of a shot and construct different meanings and representations, as an example we watched a video of Hitchcock explaining the effect as he looks and smiles at a mother and child, then shows him smiling at a women in a bikini, which changes the context. The scene showed a boy smiling and laughing and cuts to multiple shots, such as someone getting beaten up, someone landing a skateboard trick and someone urinating. All these cuts put different context on the boy laughing and make him look different at what he's smiling at.
continuity task- For this task we were told to demonstrate how we could film and edit a short scene, but make the continuity correct, we did this by making the actors stay in the same place while the camera went to a different spot, if they didn't, the scene would look odd and the actors would be in different places.
Group horror short film- As a class we decided to create a short horror scene, we had one lesson to plan the story, and decide what person had what job. We decided to make a short scene about a clueless teacher who is talking about conventions of the horror genre, while children are going missing while he carries on teaching. We did this for practice for making a scene, improving our camera skills, and working with premiere pro for the first time, and all round helping us feel more comfortable coming up with ideas and filming our project.
Initial ideas- After we were given the brief, I had a few initial ideas. My first being someone doing a cleaning up task eg. washing pots, hovering etc. while the song 'every breath you take' by The Police plays. Then the camera zooms out as the music does, changing to scary atmosphere music, then showing someone watching the music dancing to the song, you don't see the persons face, the light will be low-key compared to the high lighting of the persons kitchen.
My second idea is two people watching television sat looking really bored flicking through the channels saying that there's nothing on and everything is boring until they flick on the channel 'trick or meat' which then takes them to some scary locations such as the woods with a dead body on the floor with the two people seeing this then running through, before they both trip, and land back on the sofa, then saying this is my mind of channel, then cutting to the trick or meat logo this a slogan underneath.
My third idea opens with someone running from a dark figure as he runs through a Forrest, before he comes to a dead end, before we see the back of the person chasing him this a knife as they both stand staring at each other. Before then cutting to the trick or meat logo this a slogan underneath, and having a scary voice over telling the audience to watch the channel.
My fourth idea is a one take shot which goes from the door of a house then sweeps up the stairs into a room, along the way it gets creeper and creeps, seeing shoes and different items on the floor, then a bloody knife, in the room you then see a dead body with trick or meat on wrote with blood on their for head, before the channel logo and slogan is shown on screen. - after heavy consideration, this idea seems to be too ambitions and would be hard to do with the current lock down restrictions. my new idea someone slowly walking towards a box in a dark wood, looking around, with the song 'happy together'. The person opens the box very slowly, it has the words trick or meat in red. Before he opens the box it cuts to the trick or meat logo this a slogan underneath, and having a scary voice over telling the audience to watch the channel.
I created this title card on canva, it was relativity easy to create to make. The background is red which has to connotations with the horror genres, as well as a silhouette of someone with a knife, which also conveys horror conventions.
